Modes

D Dorian Mode on Piano

D Dorian sounds minor — but brighter and more hopeful than natural minor, because its sixth degree is raised. It is the second mode of C major, played on the white keys starting from D, and it is the go-to modal sound for jazz, Celtic music, and medieval-flavored folk.

Numbers indicate fingers: 1 = thumb, 2 = index, 3 = middle, 4 = ring, 5 = little. Both rows are shown in ascending order (low note to high note). Note the left hand starts on the pinky (5) at the lowest note and crosses the middle finger over the thumb to continue upward — that is why the left-hand numbers count down before cycling again.

Where You Hear This Scale

Dorian is the classic modal sound of Miles Davis's So What, the English folk song Scarborough Fair, and countless Celtic reels. On piano it is a gift: all white keys, identical fingering to C major, yet a completely different mood. Comparing it to D natural minor is one of the clearest ways to hear how a single raised note can transform a scale's color.
