What Is Fortepian?
Fortepian is a free ear training and note reading app for piano. No signup, no downloads — it runs entirely in your browser on desktop, tablet, or phone. Answer with on-screen buttons — or use a piano keyboard, your microphone, or a MIDI controller in supported exercises. Every answer gets instant feedback, so you learn as you play. Turn on speed mode for a timed challenge in any exercise.
Ear Training Exercises
Sharpen your listening skills with four focused exercises. Note identification plays a piano note and asks you to name it — spanning eight difficulty levels from a single octave to the full 88-key range. Interval recognition trains you to hear the distance between two notes, with ascending, descending, and harmonic playback modes. Chord training helps you distinguish major, minor, diminished, augmented, seventh, and suspended chords by ear. Scale identification plays a scale and challenges you to name it — from major and minor to modes, pentatonic, blues, and exotic scales.
Note Reading Practice
Build fluency with music notation through two practice modes. Note reading displays a note on treble or bass clef and asks you to identify it at your own pace — a focused way to learn the staff. The Sight Flow mode adds real-time pressure: notes flow across the staff and you identify them before they pass.
Track Your Progress
Your results are saved locally on your device — no account needed. Fortepian tracks accuracy and streaks across all exercises, and identifies which notes, intervals, or chords you find difficult so it can focus your practice where it matters most.
