Major
F Major Scale on Piano
F major is the first scale most pianists meet that uses a flat — a single Bb — and is often called calm and pastoral. The easiest of the flat keys, it is where students typically learn to cross the thumb under a black key.

Numbers indicate fingers: 1 = thumb, 2 = index, 3 = middle, 4 = ring, 5 = little. Both rows are shown in ascending order (low note to high note). Note the left hand starts on the pinky (5) at the lowest note and crosses the middle finger over the thumb to continue upward — that is why the left-hand numbers count down before cycling again.

Where You Hear This Scale
F major has a softer, more rounded quality than many sharp keys — a palette Beethoven reached for in his Pastoral Symphony and Chopin explored in several nocturnes. On piano the Bb sits neatly under the fourth finger of the right hand going up, so it is a rewarding scale to practice once students are comfortable with C and G.
